In a fast-paced world, with hectic schedules, this is a rare find indeed! Bernadine and James Mulhall have created a wonderful haven and country retreat in James' beautiful family home on the Carlow/Laois border.
The house itself has been transformed with the appointment of antique furnishings to create simple, stylish and comfortable rooms. The farm's outbuildings have also been converted into self-catering limestone cottages with the further addition of a log deckhouse, all nestling in tranquil grounds alongside their organic farm. Most precious of all is the genuine warmth of James and Bernadine and their commitment to serving organic food, where possible, from their own farm and kitchen garden and where not, from their neighbors and contemporaries.
On arrival, we are served Bernadine's scones with tea or coffee, in front of a roaring fire. Dinner begins with a delicious salad of avocado, cucumber, tomato and organic leaves from the garden, with bacon lardons from their own organic pigs! Next is a stunning beef fillet, (again from James' organic cows) served with some simple buttered vegetables and a stunning creamy potato bake. Dessert is a new season rhubarb crumble with almond crust and perfect homemade raspberry ice cream. Bernadine offers a small but interesting wine list and can cater for groups of up to twenty-six at one sitting.
Breakfast, the next morning, is a knockout! We choose from a vast array of fresh and marinated fruits, organic yoghurts, nuts and seeds, juices and homemade mueslis and plum preserve from the plum tree in the garden. Bernadine cooks perfect organic bacon with both beef and tomato and pork sausages, all from there own animals! Free-range eggs come from Mary Gittens, local Ballen Free hens and bread is a selection of her own granary, yeast and traditional brown soda. Stunning!
James and Bernadine will arrange farm tours, picnic hampers or relaxing spa treatments on request or help you to explore the local Barrow walking routes.
This is a wonderful retreat, alone or with a group of friends. The setting is tranquil, the food is farmhouse cooking at its best and the hospitality is second to none. A real gem in the Irish countryside!
