Farm shops are becoming exceedingly popular and if anyone out there wants to know how it’s done properly, look no further than Kate’s Farm shop just outside Wexford town. The brainchild of Kate O’Mahony and her husband Ollie – this shop is packed with just about every locally grown and made goodie from the Wexford region, and then some.
This married pair have been in the food business for fifteen years, mainly involved in the wholesale side. But in September 2005 they took the plunge to open their own retail outlet, in the shape of this popular farm shop, and set about using all the local suppliers, growers and bakers in the vicinity for their stock. The utilitarian building, which occupies the site of what used to be a former forecourt garage, is a haven for the ordinary food shopper and gourmet food lover alike. You can easily do a weekly food shop here and you’ll never need to go anywhere near a supermarket.
The chilled fresh meat section is stocked with cuts from Frank Doyle and Sons, and Enniscorthy’s Pat O’Neill supplies his own Dry Cure Bacon joints and rashers. Fry a few of these up with some Castlebridge Free Range chicken or duck eggs, then spread your accompanying toast with a good slathering of local farm butter which comes in logs wrapped in greaseproof. Also find free range Carlow chickens, and a huge choice of cheeses including Wexford Creamery cheeses, Carrigbyrne, Ardsallagh Goat’s cheese and Cooleney Farmhouse Cheese as well as continental favourites like Mascarpone and Parmigiano. Dairy products from Killowen in Crossbarry, Wexford include natural pro-biotic yogurts. Ready for eating salads which make life convenient in the kitchen come from Trudie’s in New Ross, and dressings and pestos hail from Wilton Mills, Bree, Enniscorthy. Serve these salads and dressings with a handmade quiche from Zanna, A Little Taste of Heaven, another Co Wexford food venture. To follow, the freezer is packed with locally made pre-sliced desserts and Paganini Ice Creams, desserts and cakes.
The main shop has a huge bakery section, stocked by an army of local bakers. Traditional Sodas rub shoulders with olive and sundried tomato breads, crusty loaves, healthy seed and spelt breads. There’s tea brack, sponge cakes, fruit tarts, and buns, and Mary Kelly’s beautifully golden and crisp, and gorgeously wonky round the edges apple tarts. You could pass one of these off as your own as long as you don’t blush while doing so! Mary also makes fairy cakes to die for. Wexford’s famous bread bakers include Angela whose soda breads and scones sell out fast, Mary, who is responsible for a vast range of yeast breads, and Noreen, the woman behind the continental and spelt breads and fruit loaves. An over spilling vegetable section was a fine sight the day we visited, with ‘just in’, papery skinned Wexford new potatoes, and bright scarlet juicy strawberries the main seasonal attractions. Local mushrooms come from Fancy Funghi in Wexford, and Brian Seary’s new season asparagus and baby spinach from Lusk is good enough to be tempted to seriously injure the shopper next to you in order to make sure you get some! Squeaky green Wexford cabbages, turnips, lettuces, scallions and a full range of continental lettuces are also here, alongside peppers, cucumbers and courgettes. Dry store goods include Kilmurry jams and preserves from the Wexford/Wicklow border and Loch Gorman chutneys and preserves. You will also find a wide selection of Ballymaloe Coutry Relishes and Pasta Sauces, Sean Kelly's Award Winning Puddings, Janet's Country Fayre, Ballycross Apple Farm's Artisan Jucies and Ditty's amazing Oat Cakes. Home bakers will find a great selection of conventional, organic and health flours, and the Dietary Needs section has a super range of wheat and gluten free pastas, soya milks and other health products. All in all, we don’t think there’s a better farm shop anywhere else in the land - and if you know of one, let us know immediately. How lucky Wexford is to have this on the doorstep – it even makes those Smart Alecs of the food world in Cork a mite jealous - and so they should be!
