Sowan’s Organic Bread Mix

Stradbally  |  Laois

Bakery Ireland - Bread and Cake mix producer

Baking homemade traditional bread has never been easier since Sowan's introduced their bread mixes. They use the best organic wholegrain ingredients in order to ensure the breads are traditional, natural and wholesome.

You may be too busy to make bread from scratch but when a Sowan's bread is in the oven, your kitchen will have that wonderful freshly baked bread aroma.

Their range includes Super Spelt, Mega Spelt, Wheat & Rye and traditional brown bread. The mixes only contain organic wholegrain flours, flakes and seeds without the addition of any improvers or bulking agents. There have no sugar or yeast, no colourings or flavourings. They are high in fibre and are a low GL food.

And making the bread couldn’t be easier. Open the packet, pour the mix into a bowl, stir in fresh milk or soya milk and bake for an hour.

Other products include two varieties of pancakes – one with unbleached organic white spelt flour and the second using unbleached organic wheat flour. The pancakes are equally good with either sweet or savoury fillings. There are also bun, cake and biscuit mixes. They are launching three new ‘sweet’ mixes at Bloom in May, using white spelt flour in brownie and shortbread mixes.

Sowan’s have just completed their new dedicated gluten-free unit and have just launched their new range of gluten-free bread and bun mixes.

Products are available for both retail and the catering trade, with foodservice mixes in 4.5kg and 25kg bags. You’ll find them in various health food shops and fine food stores including Good Food Ireland members Caviston's Food Emporium in Dun Laoghaire, Kates Farm Shop in Wexford, Organic Store in Birr and the Village Greengrocer in Castlemartyr. I am a time-stretched mum would love to bake but lack the time know how. Due to bloated tummy etc when I eat shop bought breads I decided to try and either reduce my intake or bake my own ha. My own efforts at baking proved indedible we cant all be Rachel Allen. I really wanted to cut down on my wheat intake without sacrificing the big love of my life, BREAD Bread with cheese a good chutney is my idea of the ideal fast food, and I cant function with tea toast first thing. I came across Sowans mixes in Fallon Byrne and gave one a go, expecting disaster. But delighted to say, it turned out perfect and was uber-easy to make You literally pour the contents of pack into a bowl, add milk or water and maybe an egg or two the instructions are easy to follow, mix and pour into a baking tin. No effort at all, no proving, no rising, no stress. Best of all, for me, no wheat Pop into oven and you have a delicious loaf in no time. And I didnt bloat up like a pregnant hippo The lack of wheat in no way compromises the flavour, in fact they are tastier than a lot of the glue that passes for bread in the shops. They use a type of flour called Spelt which was what bread used to be make with, I believe. My 8 year old son loves the pancakes as a Friday treat after school. My tip: if I dont think Ill use it up, I freeze half a loaf on the day I make it so that I have some handy to defrost. Theyre a little pricey compared with a mass produced loaf, but having seen the positive effects on my tum and tastebuds, I consider it my treat to myself and my family and a loaf can do us a couple of days. Now if only someone could come up with a similar version of pasta, I would be sorted
