The Food Store on Ballyhaunis Road is simple. The black facade is eye-catching and conspicuous, with a large window on each side of the main door. Inside, the range of foods is astonishing, with a total of some 200 products available. Everything is beautifully displayed on the various counters. This store is, in fact, a combination of three separate groups under one roof. First of all, there is fresh meat, all locally sourced beef is Aberdeen Angus and most of the lamb is fattened on their own land at Lough na Nannagh. They produce their own dry-cure bacon. Not only are all these meats tantalisingly displayed, but also beside them is a counter where ready-to-cook dishes using the meats are available. Mango lamb, plum meatballs, stir-fry curried chicken or beef, BBQ ribs or pork and apple burgers are just a small sample of what’s on offer.

The deli counter is the second group. All the meats are cooked and sliced for convenience, there are dishes of enticing salads and there are ready-cooked foods. These include Niall Heffernan’s award-winning beef stroganoff as well as chicken curry, chicken a la King, lasagne, quiches and vol-au-vents.

In 2007, the new enlarged bakery behind the store was built, allowing a wide range of fresh breads and cakes to be baked daily. Beside the breads there is an organic fruit and vegetable stand with produce from Galway. Margaret McDonnell in Ballysax supplies organic chickens. Noodle House organic pastas and sauces are also for sale. And coeliacs are catered with Sowans Spelt Bread Mix.

Staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable and owner Niall Heffernan has now opened a second shop in the Silverbridge Shopping Centre.

I am a weekly shopper in the Food Store, Claremorris. I have to say Niall and all the staff are extremely helpful and always go the extra mile. They offer their expertise on how to cook any of their meats. Their shops are maintained to the highest standard. A trip to the Food Store in Claremorris is highly recommended and well worth it for value and service. You will not be disappointed, in fact you will return again and again.
