Cork city’s historic gourmet Mecca is home to this fantastic daytime café. Like her sister Máróg O’Brien of Farmgate Restaurant and Country Store Midleton, Kay Harte is committed to producing dishes with a local flavour, and which reflect the bounty of the famous food market beneath. The café enjoys splendid views from its galleried perch, high in the apex of this old and historical building. And you can’t but help soak up the bustling atmosphere as you dine.
Kay’s food message is straightforward. Irish dishes are executed in simple, traditional fashion, with a contemporary edge. The menu uses Market produce, with suppliers named daily on the Dining room blackboard. Home reared and cured meats like Corned Beef And Corned leg of Mutton are brought in from Market butchers, many of whom rear their own livestock, to be given the Farmgate treatment of long slow cooking before serving with Parsley or Caper Sauce, floury local spuds with butter, and Spring Cabbage cooked in the meat stock, just like Granny did it, long before Prince Charles! Local treasures like Tripe and Drisheen also feature. Catch of the Day is jumping with freshness, and treated simply. Our Pan fried Plaice Fillets came with perky organic salad leaves from Devoy’s in West Cork. The fish was moist and succulent, and needed nothing more than the juice from the wedge of lemon beside it, squeezed over to give a bit of bite.
Farmgate’s Trestle Table on the balcony serves home made soup, chowder and sandwiches using Arbutus Artisan Bread as well as freshly baked Farmgate Soda Bread. Hot Dishes such as Shepard's Pie and Lamb Stew are also available here as well as in the Dining Room. A selection of home baked cakes and desserts which are served until closing time. Good Food Ireland’s Wine Person of the Year 2006, Mirco Fondrini, masterminded the wine collection from unusual small wineries, sold by glass carafe or bottle. Enjoy live piano from Donal Casey on Mon, Wed, Fri and Sat.
We always say the hardest thing to do is keep it simple in the kitchen – that ethic relies on the freshest of ingredients to start with. But, Kay Harte and her chefs do it superbly, day in, day out

Excellent establishment. I enjoyed myself three different times and the lunches were always tasty and well served. The line maybe long but worth the wait. A place not to miss for lunch in Cork
