Main Street in Bangor is hustle and bustle, with locals going about their daily business and visitors meandering along, taking in the local scene. And The Heatherlea coffee shop, restaurant, deli and home bakery is very much a part of that scene. The restaurant, on one side of these bright, airy and modern premises, is busy with a constant buzz all day.
You can enjoy a hearty breakfast here of traditional Ulster Fry, served with freshly baked potato bread and soda bread with free-range local eggs. This is joined on the menu by a breakfast bap or unusually, rich fruit loaf toasted with banana. Lunch has daily specials that include fish from Portavogie and beef from Mawhinney’s. Desserts offered are traditional apple sponge, rhubarb tart or lemon meringue pie.
The coffee shop is on the other side and has elevenses, light lunches and afternoon teas. You can have a Gourmet sandwich made to order at the Deli counter – there’s a choice of bread, dressing, meat or fish. Or try homemade shepherd’s pie, chicken and ham pie, vol-au-vents, and quiches, served with a salad selection. These are also available to take away. The main bread and cake counter is on the go all the time as customers choose from an enticing range of breads, cakes and buns fresh from the bakery - cherry buns, cream puffs, cream pastries and scones. A central table has a range of cakes that includes sultana cake, iced coffee cake, Madeira, cherry, boiled fruit, cinnamon and apple as well as the Ballyholme Irish oatmeal biscuits.
The Heatherlea's rich fruit loaf was a gold medal winner at the UK Great Taste awards in August 2007. In the Counter Service category at the Bangor Business Awards in May 2007 it reigned supreme for its “relaxed atmosphere, attention to detail and the delicious food”. Hear hear!
