West Cork was lucky enough to be the first place to be hit by the powerhouse that is Ruth Healy. Her ultimately stylish Urru Culinary Store first opened only few short years ago - and has risen from relatively quiet beginnings to being one of the most talked about shops in the land. Now, with brother Willy, the pair have also opened a sister premises in Mallow. And despite growing the business hugely in a relatively short space of time, standards here are higher than they’ve ever been.
Ruth is a Slow Food exponent and that philosophy follows through in absolutely everything she does. You won’t find anything here that has not been produced with love and care – from the exotic olives oils from single estates in Italy, Spain, France and Greece, to West Cork’s famous artisan produce, Irish pickles, jams and chutneys, and finest fresh breads and pastries. And that’s just for starters. Keep browsing those shelves, and believe us, you will want to keep browsing. You’ll find cookbooks from classic Elizabeth David to modern day Rachel Allen, great kitchen tools and gadgets, and a fine selection of boutique wines from Cork’s own Bubble Brothers. After all that retail therapy you’ll need a good cup of coffee, which you will most certainly find here. And perhaps one of Urru’s famous sandwiches that have had rave reviews from some of Ireland’s top food writers. Try Anthony Creswell’s Ummera Smoked Chicken with sunblush tomatoes and sweet pepper relish. Or Frank Krawcyzk’s Kassler and Coolea Mature cheese with wholegrain mustard and mango vinaigrette. That’s just two of a daily changing blackboard of goodies on offer here. Sit at the sweeping beech handcrafted counter, or at the large table at the rear of the shop, eat, sip, chat to your accompanying diners, and above all, enjoy.
If you want to impress someone with a fabulous gift, you couldn’t do better than send them a beautiful Urru hamper, packed with all these goodies, in a big box wrapped in crackly cellophane and tied with Urru’s corporate colours in a big orange bow.
In the Mallow shop, upper floors will allow for cookery demonstrations and workshops, alongside the educational Slow Food events that already take place in Mallow. All these are ideas to be developed in the future. But for now, Ruth and Willy Healy can be very proud indeed of what they have already achieved. Make it a must-stop when you visit Cork.
