Gourmet Food | Delicatessen | Wine Shop

Kate O’Hara has recently taken over this prestigious shop in Sligo town. But it remains one of the best gourmet food and wine shop and delicatessen around. Established in 1982 by Kate Pettit and Frank Hopper, its old-fashioned black painted frontage, bay windows and distinctive red and gold lettering ensured that first impressions were excellent. Inside it remains an  ‘Aladdin’s Cave.’ There have been some changes in product range but the quality remains top-class. The shelves are packed with goodies of all kinds, beautifully presented and laid out in an inspired style.

The chocolate shelves stock Skellings Chocolate Company from Co Kerry, Butlers, Lindt, Danucci from Dundalk, Celtic from Co Meath and Gallwey Chocolates from Waterford. There are chutneys and jams from Janet’s Country Fayre, Coopershill three fruit marmalade, Kilmurry jams from Co Wicklow, and Filligans fiery pepper relish and cucumber relish. Noodle House organic jams include morello cherry, apricot and peach. There are fresh tea bracks made locally alongside a range of coffees and organic teas and infusions.

There are fine wines and vintage ports, oils, olives, spices, and pate. Salamis, smoked salmon, cheeses, honey, and pasta– it seems the list is endless. You can choose from Stable Diet breakfast cereal or Irish Health Foods range of organic fruit and flakes to make your own. The range from this Farranfore company includes brown lentils, black beans millet flakes, organic soya beans, rice and couscous.

The freezer has Murphy’s delicious icecream, well known to anyone visiting Dingle as well as Tickety moo from Northern Ireland. Ready to eat home cooked meals from Drumshanbo offers a good choice. Brown free-range eggs sit close to Arbutus bread and locally made salads. In the fridge, you’ll find black and white puddings from Fermanagh, Knockanore Farmhouse Cheese from Waterford and Cloonagal Artic charr, hot smoked with honey and mustard. A table just inside the door is choc-a-bloc with organic vegetables.

Shelves on one side contain a large ranges of the Cottage Delight brand, with jars of salsa, mustard, sauces, chutneys, jams, marinades and preserves in the striking packaging. It’s very easy to while away time browsing – but with such wonderful products, there is always something tempting to buy.

In an adjoining shop, but still part of the overall premises, there are cosmetics and toiletries, mainly the Crabtree & Evelyn range.
