If you live or work in the environs of Morehampton Road, there is really no need to look any further than Donnybrook Fair. Downstairs, the extensive food-hall is stocked to the rafters with a mixture of fine, artisan and gourmet speciality items and store -cupboard essentials. There is a dedicated butchery and fish counter and the kitchen works round the clock to produce breads, pastries, cakes and take-out hot and cold lunches and supper for the lazy cooks among us!
Upstairs, there is a busy restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and even Sunday brunch in a modern room, styled with clean lines and contemporary furniture with menus that combine the finest seasonal Irish ingredients with flavours from around the world. Head Chef's signature dishes are the highlight of the menu.
When we visited on a cold, rainy evening, we were warmly greeted by the charming staff and ordered a plate of succulent, meaty Castletownbere king scallops, cooked just to the point with crispy bacon and served with a simple cress salad. Afterwards, a gleamingly fresh Seabass fillet sat on a tasty, Piquant Caponata of olives, cherry tomatoes, capers and anchovies For dessert, we chose a creamy Vanilla Panna Cotta, perfectly balanced by a mound of tart mixed berries, macerated in some local Boru vodka.
Coffee, also for sale downstairs, is from the wonderful, boutique Union Hand- Roasters and is made by skilled, well-trained baristas with an obvious passion for their job! There is an extensive cocktail list and a carefully chosen boutique wine menu…all in keeping with the establishment’s ethos of simple food, cooked well with local, seasonal produce.
And if you have been inspired by the team at Donnybrook Fair well now you can learn from the experts in their new cookery school.
