For the best part of 20 years, The Bay Tree Coffee House in Holywood has been attracting customers from far and wide. From as early as 8am, when breakfast service begins, the tables seem to be constantly full. You can choose the Full Bay Tree Fry with bacon, preservative-free Irish pork sausages, free range egg, tomato, mushrooms and of course, those Northern specialities, potato bread, soda bread and fried wheaten bread. If you want to kick-start your day, try the special Bay Tree porridge, served with cream, honey, banana and Irish Mist. Or the unusual bacon and banana toasted sandwich served with maple syrup.
Every morning, owner Sue Farmer bakes dozens of her famous Cinnamon Scones. While she has given away many of her recipe secrets in her cookbook of Bay Tree recipes, how she makes the cinnamon scones is very hush-hush. And we can vouch for these special scones- warm and delicious with lots of raisins, melting brown sugar and cinnamon! Other treats to accompany one of the speciality coffees (displayed on a blackboard) or teas include other varieties of homemade scones, shortbread, apple tart and cream, coffee cake or carrot cake.
For lunch, there are blackboard specials for mains and desserts as well as the everyday menu. Try some of the Noodle House's wonderful Organic Irish Irish Pasta or Sue’s “Super Salads” are extremely popular, five portions of freshly prepared salads, many of the herbs from Sue’s own garden. In fact, as she is a very keen gardener, menus are inspired by the season.
Dinner at The Bay Tree is a real treat with a menu that is both imaginative and creative. Start with baked goats cheese in filo pastry with tomato and mint sauce vierge or piri piri prawns, followed by halibut with herbs, capers, butter and wet polenta or rabbit legs with mustard and marjoram. Finish with a tuile of lemon curd ice-cream with strawberry sauce, caramelised rhubarb and custard tart or a white chocolate cheesecake.
