Claire Nash is a great hostess. You know this, because everyone who walks through her restaurant door gets the same warm welcome. She is a true professional who loves her business, and values the importance of that first impression. Whoever you are, be assured of her personal attention. And believe you me, that alone will make you want to return.
The thing that gives away this café’s popularity is the permanent queue which forms at the buffet style food counter at the front of the shop the minute the doors open. Cork City workers line up for fragrant home baked scones and house preserves, fresh coffee and great breakfast treats like creamy Porridge or Muesli with home made fruit compotes and Claire’s “Wild Orchard” freshly squeezed juice. At lunch, it provides convenient speed for those just stopping in for a quick bite. But if you have more time, grab a table at the rear, where friendly waiters provide efficient service. You’ll soak up the infectious Cork city buzz as you eat. And the food is worth taking time over.
Seasonality and availability form the food ethos, and chefs devise a daily menu around morning deliveries of fresh local fish, meats and salad leaves, vegetables and herbs from local growers. Fish is the house speciality, not surprisingly, since Claire picks the best of the day’s catch from O’Connell’s award winning stall in the English Market. The day we visit, she recommends a starter of tender rings of fresh Calamari with Tomato Sauce, followed by a fine piece of Pan Seared Cod served either with Roasted Flat Mushrooms and Potato Gratin, or on a light leafy salad with sweet cherry tomatoes (the day was hot). Her Seafood Chowder is legendary too. And there’s plenty to please meat eaters with a traditional Carvery featuring Sirloin of Beef or French Rack of Pork, and specials like Collar of Irish Bacon with Cabbage from the Market’s butchers. After that, dessert has to be a bit special and so it is! Lemon Polenta cake with fresh berries, or seasonal hot fresh Rhubarb Crumble (we can vouch for either!) and other choices are all home made and delicious. Claire’s love of good wines from boutique wineries is showcased in a small selection from Old and New World. Or sip on a chilled Heineken from Cork’s brewery, naturally!
