This highly acclaimed, award winning traditional smokehouse owned by Peter and Birgitta Curtin produces superb smoked salmon and locally caught mackerel, and also smokes cheeses from some of Clare’s renowned cheesemakers. Burren Smokehouse Organic Smoked Salmon comes from Clare Island Co Mayo, while Premium Smoked Salmon is from Galway. The Curtins’ latest creation is tender and succulent Hot Smoked Salmon, infused with delicate oaky flavour, and we think not to be missed!
The shop is a gourmet’s delight, Birgitta points out superb cheeses like Burren Gold and Kilshanny, as well as all the Smokehouse’s fish specialities, smoked by her husband, all the while cutting off slivers here and there for tasting. She also recommends other Irish artisan produce, including Burren honeys, and the region’s famous Wine of The Glen range of fruit wines from Clare, which are very popular and absolutely superb. She’s also delighted to be able to offer the seasonal Burren Ice Cream, made in New Quay. The craft shop is worth a browse too, for super Irish art, jewellery, knitwear, music and books.
The shop is also a Visitor Centre and there’s a traditional smoker on show as well as a short film presentation on the curing and smoking process. It all makes for an interesting learning experience combined with some food retail therapy, just a short walk away from the main square in historic Lisdoonvarna. Afterwards, it’s back up the hill to the family’s Roadside Tavern for a pint of the black stuff and some delicious pub food – a perfect way to finish the day. And don’t forget The Burren Smokehouse hampers are made to order.
