Burren Perfumery Tea Rooms

Purfumery & Tea Rooms

You can’t get much more ‘off the beaten track’ than this secluded spot. The journey spans roads running across Ireland’s famous Burren, with its moonscape of exposed limestone glinting in the light. The little tearoom is delightful, with wrought iron garden tables graced with floral tablecloths, fresh flowers and herbs. On a warm afternoon, the pleasure lies in eating outdoors under the shade of the trees, listening to birdsong and smelling the sweet fragrances from the Perfumery’s herb garden.

Food is uncomplicated and home cooked, based on organic produce and ingredients sourced in local farmer’s markets by owner Sadie Chowen, whose ethos is to respect nature, seasonality and regionality. Her sensitivity is also captured in the fragrances and beauty products made in her tiny Perfumery next door. The pretty Tea Room menu features light bites like freshly baked Organic Scones served with preserves made in the area, or honey from the Perfumery’s own beehives. More substantial dishes include warming freshly homemade Leek and Potato Soup with brown bread, Mushroom Quiche with Organic Salad or a local cheese platter, which may include Aillwee’s Burren Gold Cheese, Gubbeen, Cashel Blue and Poulcoin Farmhouse Cheeses, all served with succulent pickles.

Home baked desserts and cakes make afternoon tea here a treat. We loved the seasonal Fruit Crumble, rhubarb in our case, served in a handsome wedge, with a dollop of thick cream on the side. But you might fancy a slice of homely Coffee Gateau or crumbly Carrot Cake, accompanied by one of the house speciality herb teas created from the garden’s hand picked herbs. There is also has a small selection of wines from organic and bio-dynamic producers, as well as organic freshly brewed coffee, and Green and Black’s rich and velvety Hot Chocolate or try some of their homemade Elderflower Cordial.

Whatever your choice, take it from us; you’ll feel all the better for it and bolstered in readiness for the next stage of the tour of this wild and beautiful part of Ireland. But not before you’ve visited The Burren Perfumery’s Shop next door, where you’ll find all manner of Sadie’s wonderful lotions and potions for sale.
