When Eden opened its doors onto Meeting House Square in Dublin’s Temple Bar in the late nineties, it was to a flurry of excitement. Never before had we seen such contemporary, confident cooking in such a smart and modern setting.
Since then, it has evolved even further into a real landmark on the Irish culinary landscape. The room, which once seemed radical, has softened over the years, but still retains a real identity with minimalist, almost retro furniture, high ceilings and a private mezzanine floor over a bustling open kitchen. The staff, then, as now, are smart and polished, with a real knowledge of the menu and Sean Gargano’s thoughtful wine list and the cooking is still simple but assured.
Known for its straightforward preparations, seasonal ingredients, and fresh flavours. Eden has become one of Dublin’s busiest restaurants under the steady hands of Head Chef Michael Durkin, and General Manager Mark Matanes. Michael’s ultra-seasonal menus rely on locally sourced produce, meat, seafood, game and cheeses; breads and ice creams are homemade. We began with one of Eden’s trademark mini fish starters, a small, perfectly formed Fillet of Halibut, Encrusted with Tomato and Parmesan and served with Lime, Rocket and a little mound of Mashed Potato. The fish was fresh, tasty and beautifully treated. Main course was a steaming plate of Ricotta filled Tortellini, swimming in a Creamy Sauce of Roasted Fennel, Walnuts and wilted Spinach…a truly wonderful concoction. Dessert stole the show. It was a deliciously gooey, Sunken Chocolate and Brandy Cake with a Tart Raspberry Sauce and a little dollop of Crème-fraiche. Fantastic!
Sunday brunch at Eden is a real institution. Try a plate of the famous Eden Smokies - Smoked Haddock with Crème Fraiche, Cherry Tomatoes, Scallion and Cheese Topping Gratinated and a one of their pretty Bellini cocktails. Book a table on the heated terrace and watch one of the outdoor screenings of a classic movie in the square or sometimes even catch a live performance. Life couldn’t get better!
Outside seating April/May – September/October weather permitting
