Staying in The Merrion Hotel is an absolutely wonderful experience. For anyone who remembers these Georgian buildings on Upper Merrion Street in their previous life as Government offices, the transformation to Dublin’s most luxurious 5-Star Luxury hotel is just unbelievable. The rabbit warren of offices inside is gone; in their place are the most fabulous reception rooms, bars, restaurants and bedrooms.
The hotel has been created from four magnificent Grade 1 Listed 18th century terrace houses, forming the Main House. A specially commissioned Garden Wing is contemporary and this is where you’ll find the luxurious Tethra Spa.
Two splendid interconnecting Drawing Rooms, with French windows leading to the Garden Terrace and the gardens, have priceless artwork from the hotel’s private collection and specially commissioned furniture. With comfortable sofas and armchairs and a warm fire, these rooms are very popular for business meetings and for the Merrion’s wonderful Afternoon Tea.
Our garden bedroom in the Main House, overlooking the garden and terrace, was absolute luxury. With blue painted walls and white furniture, two deep sofas, flat screen television and wide desk, this was a room that we didn’t want to leave. Add in the six-foot wide bed with rich quilt, monogrammed sheets and warm blankets and the delightful large white-tiled bathroom, and it was all sheer bliss.
Dining in the Cellar Restaurant is classy, with food to match. Executive Chef Ed Cooney and his team prepare wonderful fish dishes including Dover sole, filleted at the table, baked sea bass and pan-roasted scallops. Melt-in-the-mouth Irish fillet steak, braised lamb shank and duck breast kept meat lovers very content. As for the Desserts, they are are truly scrumptious - Merrion Apple Tarte Tatin with Cider Caramel Sauce, Pecan and Raisin Soufflé with cinnamon ice cream and iced tiramisu parfait with coffee Anglaise and a White and Dark Chocolate Biscotti are just some of the temptations.
The Cellar Bar in the 18th Century wine vaults, with its bare bricked walls and vaulted ceilings, is not only stunning but a great place to have a drink or a bite at lunchtime. Upstairs No 23 is an intimate cocktail bar, perfect for an aperitif or an after dinner drink.
